Sri Lanka's weather is governed by two distinct monsoons — the south-west monsoon (May to September) and the north-east monsoon (October to January). Understanding how these affect different regions is essential when planning a golf trip, as the island's varied geography means one area can be sunny while another experiences heavy rain.
The period from November through April is widely considered the best time to visit for golf. The west and south coasts enjoy dry, sunny weather with temperatures between 27–32°C — ideal for spending a full day on the course. Courses like Royal Colombo Golf Club and Galle Golf Club are at their finest condition during these months. Colombo's courses are accessible year-round, but conditions are particularly favourable in winter.
While the southwest monsoon affects coastal areas, the central highlands remain relatively dry and cool from May to September. This makes it the ideal window for playing Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and Victoria Golf & Country Resort. Temperatures in the hills rarely exceed 22°C, making for comfortable, enjoyable rounds throughout the day without the need for early morning tee times.
The south-west monsoon (May–September) brings sustained rainfall to the west and south coasts, making coastal courses difficult to play. The north-east monsoon (October–November) affects the east coast and some northern areas. Course drainage varies widely — some Sri Lankan clubs manage monsoon conditions well, while others close or restrict play. Always confirm course conditions in advance during shoulder seasons.
For a comprehensive Sri Lanka golf trip, I recommend travelling in December to March. You'll enjoy excellent conditions on coastal courses, with the option to head to the hills for a contrasting experience. This period also coincides with Sri Lanka's festive season and cricket calendar, adding extra cultural richness to your visit.
